FOCUS

“FOCUS – Flying Outfit for Control of Unsafe Seagulls” Project, formerly part of the Public Call for Proposals to support businesses in conducting feasibility studies (Phase 1) and technology transfer projects (Phase 2) consistent with RIS 3, funded under the Campania Regional Operational Program (POR) ERDF 2014–2020

TME, in partnership with CTM SRL, Topview SRL, and CeSMA (Center for Advanced Metrological and Technological Services) at the University of Naples “Federico II,” is the recipient of a grant for the implementation of the “Focus” technology transfer project, whose objective is to define a process for providing a service that enables the management, through the use of drones, situations of potentially hazardous interference between human activity and that of seagulls. This process is divided into two phases.

The Two Stages of the Process

The first phase is a monitoring phase, carried out by a drone that maps nests posing a significant risk—either from seagull attacks on humans or other domestic animals, or from health risks caused by seagull droppings.

The second phaseinvolves using a drone to collect fecal samples for microbiological and parasitological analysis, and using another remotely piloted aircraft to heat the eggs in the nest, with the aim of rendering them infertile without destroying them.
At the end of thesecond phase, the effectiveness of the previous interventions is monitored so that they can be repeated at a later date.

The activities that TME—which is the lead partner of the consortium—has taken responsibility for carrying out include project management (OR 1), electronic design (OR 3), prototype construction (OR 6), and testing (OR 7), in collaboration with the project partners.
